Career Defined : Video BLOG

When you ride your bike all day you think about a lot of things. Mostly trivial things. Should I get sausage in my breakfast burrito? Is three coffee breaks before 10am to many? Where the heck is Patrick McDonnell going with the comic strip Mutt’s? And every now and then you will actually think about your job. How long has this “Turbo” been in my bag. (A “Turbo” is usually a delivery needed to be done in 15 minutes.) Does PDC really mean “oversize” or will it just be another stack of papers in a fancy bag?

So the question of the day is really something to think about.

Q: What constitues a “Career” as a messenger?

Below is the definition of the word career as defined by

ca·reer –noun occupation or profession, especially one requiring special training, followed as one’s lifework: He sought a career as a lawyer.
Well in a weird twist of irony this works. As most messengers, at least in San Diego, work as “legal couriers” hustling paperwork from one law firm to another and onto court.

As close as most bike messengers come to becoming a lawyer.

2.a person’s progress or general course of action through life or through a phase of life, as in some profession or undertaking: His career as a soldier ended with the armistice.
I consider this the most correct definition. When you earn a living as a messenger you are first and foremost a messenger. Your entire life revolves around the occupation and lifestyle. As in the example of a soldier. I once had a friend in the marines. He was so dedicated to the career he had a camouflage couch. I use to jump on it and say, “can you see me?” He didn’t think it was funny. And second to all this talk of career and the Marines, most messengers will say or at least feel a similar sentiment, “Once a messenger (marine) always a messenger.”

3.success in a profession, occupation, etc.
I think this is closer related to a true professional athlete. Just to rise to the level of pro athlete puts you in the circles of some level of success. To get a job as a bike messenger and be successful just means you have a pulse and show up to work… sometimes.
